I'm interested in knowing how people search for jobs around here and what strategies do they use? You could be applying for jobs in the US or in India but how do you position yourself for the role you are looking for? Do you have a preset role and salary figure in mind? Do you set yourself a deadline to change your strategy? How much flexibility do you give yourself in the position or salary? What considerations do you have like travel, shifts etc.?
Feel free to share your thoughts on this.

Feel free to share your thoughts on this. All the questions I wanted to ask . I tried using the Resume Zapper of timesjobs to send my Resume to 1,250 consultants but haven't had a response. I am trying to reach out my ex-managers / colleagues. The problem there is that, I will have to be an employee of Wipro/Polaris. Don't know if that's good or bad and how they compensate. No preset role or salary. Expecting more of a technical role than a managerial one. Have a very wide range when it comes to salary(18-27 Lakhs) Absolutely no travel. Shifts might be OK, it the office happens to be nearby. I would prefer 2nd shifts as you could get lot of your personal things done in the morning.

Thanks CW. How does the Indian market look now? I was told that the market is hot for candidates who are in the 5-10 years experience group and not as hot as one would imagine, for folks who are more experienced than that as you keep going up the pyramid. So are you applying for jobs everyday?

Which field is good for person with the background below? Started with programming, dabbled in all flavors (systems programming, middle layer, network management etc etc) and then moved away to marketing and moved to solution architecture. These two (marketing and solution) are very closely coupled, it's good to keep learning new paradigms of the market but it is lot of round the clock working across different zones and trade shows/ customer demos which involves quite a bit of traveling and lot of BSing which doesn't go well with an engineer mind Which field is a natural progression or transition to a newer role? Is test management good for this background? Or Project management? Or back to development ?

So are you applying for jobs everyday? That seems true. I've got a lot of emails from consulting folks after posting my Resume on naukri.com but nothing further. Things take it's own sweet time here, since I started only after the World Cup for job hunting it could be 1/2 weeks before any proper response. I have few subscriptions from timesjobs/naukri everyday. If anything matches my interest, I apply for it.

Isn't it range starting @ 18L is too low for 10 yrs experience? What would be the implication for underselling initially and later move onto high paying scale? Would that be too hard?

I would think so. 18L is the very bottom, I would be willing to accept. I am shooting for something in the range of 24-27 Lakhs. Location is a handicap for me. I can't move out of Chennai, places like BLR, Noida, Hyderabad might offer more for the same position. Underselling initially and moving later might not be an issue. Looks like there is a mandatory 2 month notice period here in India. When someone doesn't want to work for you anymore, why keep him for 2 months?.

Wow! 2 months... really too much of time. 2 weeks is more than enough IMO. In our company, we seldom let the employee stay for more than a week. Once the KT is complete, the employee is asked to go home! Its not good for the morale of the company to have an employee who has no interest in the company's projects. I have no clue as to how Indian companies work in this regard though. May be the they try to extract as much work as possible from the the quitter and make him pay for his mistake

Is it good idea to attend for Job mela or walk in interviews for mid level experience? Isn't it they meant only for freshers or am I wrong? This is in context of India.

It's just been over a month but based on my experience so far 10+years experience jobs are gotten through contacts. I am also looking out for job fairs in India to see what kind of jobs they offer. Here's a list of few job fairs which are coming up. www.timesjobs.com/candidate/jobfair/jobfair.jspThe one from shine.com in USA recently was not much of a hope. They just got your Resume and said they'll get back to you and nothing much happens after that.

one tip I got from my friends is , when you see an ad, call before sending your resume, it could be just recruiters collecting resumes.
