As the talks/rumors about Sachin's retirement looms around the corner, who do we hae to fill those GIANT shoes? The team has played without him in a few series before but the replacements have always been shuffled up and down the order and or even been dropped from the team (like Murali Vijay). How should the team management approach this situation? How should this transition happen?

I think Sachin loves game too much to retire in the near future, he might retire in next 2-3 years and may not play in the 2015 edition of WC but he will still be playing for 2 more years. Plus this world series, he proved that he still has skills to be in the top echelon.
I think Public should give him the dignity of himself deciding when to hang up his pads. Opening batsman is the best and worst position for cricket but several have shown the potential to replace SRT. At short time, Veeru and Gauti or Koli.

Is Sachin selfish? All top players to play a global sports at big stage has to have a selfish streak to excel and keep motivated. But more and more people say, he should retire and pave way for younger players. Cricket is the only sports in India which pays rich dividends for players; in that way Sachin should allow another talented player to reap the benefits and achieve star status but if he is still capable of having top form as seen in WC, why should he ?

Tendulkar won't stop, says Gary Kirsten. www.espncricinfo.com/icc_cricket_worldcup2011/content/story/509401.html"Gary Kirsten, for whom the World Cup final was his last game as coach of India, also said he didn't think Tendulkar would stop here. "Sachin is the greatest sporting role model I've met in my life," Kirsten said. "He's had an incredible last three or four years, and he's enjoying his cricket even more. I don't think he is going to stop." "

I would say Sachin should retire. What's there more to achieve in ODI's?. His 100th 100 can come in Tests. There is Kohli/Sehwag/Gambir/Murali Vijay/Raina/Dhoni/Yuvraj to handle the batting in absence of Sachin and Dravid. It's better to retire when folks ask you why rather than why not?. Gavaskar retired at the right time after the brilliant innings of 96 in Bangalore but Kapil took looong time to get to 432

Very interesting thread. I thought no Indian would ask Sachin to retire but again I am not a big follower of cricket. All I know is sachin is a great player and he will make runs in when India is in critical situation and he has the ability to handle stress. Now that you are all mentioning other players Kohli/Sehwag/Gambir/Murali Vijay/Raina/Dhoni/Yuvraj who can handle batting, I am thinking in different angle.
Is he really selfish then?

The fact that they won the World Cup final without the help of Sachin should give them some motivation. As Virat Kohli aptly put it. Sachin has carried the nations burden for 21 years, it's time someone carried him on the shoulders. Let the likes of Kohli/Gambhir/Yuvraj/Raina take it to the next level. Yes, it's difficult to replace Sachin but so were other great players like Viv Richards, Dennis Lillee, Aravinda De Silva, Ian Botham and host of others.
