Happened to watch Lion King recently at Minskoff Theatre minskofftheatre.com/in New York (Times Square). minskofftheatre.com/
The story line is same as the movie and seen in many Indian movies. A young cub named Simba is born to Mufasa and Nala in African wilds. Simba's uncle Scar is upset because he'll not be the next line in for the throne. Scar kills Mufasa and convinces that Simba is responsible for the death of his father and asks him to runaway. Simba after running away eventually decides to comeback and fight for his place. All ends well.
If you ever wonder whether the ticket is worth it. Just wait for the opening act "Circle of Life". This is what the brochure says "Giraffes strut, birds swoop, gazelles leap -- the entire serengeti comes to life. And as the music soars, Pride rock slowly rises from the stage". Every word of it is true and must been seen to be believed.
Acting : In this show, Scar stood out, but it was an authored backed role. The others who played Rafiki/Mufasa/Simba/Nala were good. Pumbaa/Timon provide the lighter moments of this show for the little ones. But performance is not the selling point for the show. The puppetry, costumes are.
Costume: Each costume is crafted with great thought.
Music : Songs like "Circle of Life", "Hakuna Matata" must be familiar if you have seen the movie.
Bottom Line :
I would say Lion King is a visual delight and a must watch if you plan to visit New York and looking for a Broadway show to go with the family. Having said that be prepared to lighter by 500 dollars if you are a family of four.
Few Tips / Notes:
There is no dress code.
If you have small kids, you've booster seats in the theatre. Feel free to pick up 1 or 2 seats depending on the height of the little ones.
No outside food allowed inside the theatres (of course there are exception for allergies). If possible, avoid buying any water/food in the theatre. 4 dollars/bottle of water is ridiculous
