Don't you think the govt is interfering in personal affairs? Look at this way, these fat weddings to create lot of small jobs. It's not just about wasting food although I do agree that there is ample waste of food. If wasting food is the only concern then let govt do some rules that all left out food to be donated to charity/hostels.

But what the govt. should do if the citizens do not understand their societal responsibilities? en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Conspicuous_consumption is a topic onto itself. The gap between haves and have-nots have increased in this new age global economy and unless the citizens understand their role in this increasing display of 'status' themselves, some intervention is required even if means govt. interfering on private affairs. During independence struggle, Gandhiji openly used to ask rich women to depart with their jeweleries and that act was considered noble. So if govt. wants to introduce curb on unnecessary spending, should it be considered necessary or an invasion of personal rights ?

There's always food wastage in everything and anything. Even hotels waste food. There's even some amount of wastage at home. Why just target the food wasted at weddings alone? Though food wastage and world hunger are related to each other, the method in which one feeds (pun intended) the other needs to be investigated. One needs to come up with a framework to reduce the wastage and channel it to feed hunger. I'm surprised that there aren't non-profit organizations that take up this issue and try to prevent such massive wastage.

If you think about the biggest waste in the country, then we have to start with the Parliament . We can worry about food later!

You can't throw baby out of the bath water ! Few elites (political honchos and big league business folks) will continue to host such wasteful parties bypassing the law (if it becomes a law in the future)and the restriction will be as usual might be only to middle class and poor class.
Instead of making it a law for one dish, they should spread the awareness that millions go hungry , so if people coming to these parties are from well-fed sector, serve them less than them wasting what is served. Tighter control on quantity (of serving and prepared food) than variety should be the way to go.

I would be disappointed if govt pass law on how many dishes can be there at my kids wedding. It's my hard worked money that I am going to spend on my own kids. It's not that I looted someone and spending. Yeh... I do know that I am not going to end by making 50 dish as you generally see in Telugu weddings ;D
