I use Airtel and I am pretty happy with it.
Please don't go for BSNL or MTNL. I heard their service is pathetic.
If it takes for you to settle down and you need internet connectivity at a temporary residence, opt for Tata Photon Plus Data Card. Tata Photon connectivity is good.

My friends hubby is planning to work from home for his US office. He is planning to use Vonage as well. What plan do you suggest in that case. Thanks,

My in-laws had BSNL which always had some or other issue with connectivity, and their customer service is also worst. They have now switched to Airtel, and have been using it for past 1 year without any issues.

We are moving to a house that is currently rented. We don't know whether the house has a setup box or not. I plan to call the tenants this week. Lets say tenants don't have internet connection, in that case how long do you think it will take. More than anything else, what documents they ask for this? as in ration card, pan card. I have nothing, absolutely nothing.

can we order airtel broadband without airtel phone line? I don't think so. Actually it's the same line with a splitter for Model and Phone.

I have nothing, absolutely nothing.I think it too 3-4 weeks for me to get it done as Airtel folks didn't have a setup box in my apartment complex. Airtel folks have monthly deadlines. So, expect your work to be completed by 18th of the month (so that they can send their status report on no. of connections ) Documents required: www.airtel.in/wps/wcm/connect/airtel.in/airtel.in/home/foryou/broadband+and+fixed+line/know+more/documentation+required/I submitted my Sale Deed as the Proof of Address but the folks in Airtel didn't seem to accept it without notarization. Don't know if Sale deed is not a proof of address what else can be?. You can submit the Passport for identification purposes but you would definitely need one of the documents mentioned in the above link for proof of address (they don't accept identification given by Post office). I would follow these steps. a) Apply for Id card through Post Office. b) Take the Id card and Open a Bank A/C (Nationalized banks accept the Id card issued by Post Offices). c) Take the Bank Account copy (proof of address) + Passport (identity proof). It takes time, but unfortunately that's the way it works in India.

a) Apply for Id card through Post Office. I am confused. Are you talking about the address proof provided by post office? Is Photo ID is different from address proof or same?

Photo Identity would be Passport/Driving License/Voter ID Card (documents issued by Post Office can only be used for Address Proof in nationalized banks). If you passport or Driving License has the address you for the residence you want the connection, then there is no issue. You can use it as an identity proof + address proof. However, for most of us, the Passport address would be different. For some it may be abroad or their native town etc. In such cases, the Airtel folks ask for address proof of the place where you are residing currently, in addition to the identity proof. If you are renting, then the lease agreement should be an acceptable document.
