Saravana Bhavan is hands down winner. I prefer the one opposite to Ranganathan Street, Tnagar and the one in Parrys Corner over others.
Is there any place that chat items are good? There was one chat center in Spencer's plaza that used to be good - cant remember the name, though.

There's one Karthick Tiffin Center in Anna Nagar West (near Nilgiris). See lots of IT folks (one of the TCS office is very nearby) having Dosa/Idlis around there. It's near the signal and seem to affect the traffic in the evening.
Haven't tried that out myself. Will do it soon and post my opinion about it.

What about simple Vada and Kaapi at any Hot Chips restaurants! I like their quick service. My favorite branch is the one at Pondy Bazaar. :-)

Haa, Arasappar in Chennai wins it Hands down when it comes to Non-Veg restaurant in Chennai.
Dhaba Express on Cenotaph Road is good for North Indian food. Bhangra Pepsi is worth a mention there.

If you need to taste the best sambhar in Chennai, head out to Ratna Cafe. In the triplicane part of Chennai, the presiding deity is someone else but there is an exception when it comes to Ratna Cafe. Here the presiding deity is the Sambar . It's a vegetarian restaurant in the by lanes of Triplicane. Not a great ambience but lot of local folks from Chennai seem to love the restaurant. A visit to Parthasarathy temple in triplicane has to be accompanied with a visit to Ratna Cafe Years back, Basundhi (sweet) used to be my favorite here. Should try it sometime.

Mathura restaurant in Tarapore towers is the best when it comes to authentic Udipi food. Their North Indian varieties are also pretty darn good. Prices are very nominal. During my last trip to India, I visited the place at least 6 times in our 15 day stay there.
Matsya is also my favorite. Matsya near Egmore station brings back memories of my childhood days.

Love the open air section of Mathura. As a big fan of sweets, I like the Badam Halwa. Just wish they would increase the quantity now. You don't know if it's a sample of Badam Halwa or the real one.

Speaking of Sweets, Agarwal Sweets for Basundhi - Yummm... Grand Sweets, Adayar for traditional sweets and snacks are my favs. Grand Sweets earlier had branches only in Adayar and Anna Nagar. Now after the split they have opened too many branches. Hope they are able to maintain the quality Here's the bitter sweet tale of the recent happenings. www.livemint.com/2011/01/19222300/A-bittersweet-conflict.html?d=2
