Proof of Address card.

Anywhere and everywhere in India you need to have a Proof of Address. For people who don't have driving license or ration cards, this is really difficult. The current best option is to apply for a Proof of Address Card through the Post Office.

How to apply?

a) www.chennaipost.gov.in/PoAC_Application.pdf ( Fill in the above form along with your photograph ).
b) Pay Rs. 250 in the post office.
c) They give you a slip and will send you a mail to your current residence within a month.
4) Once you receive the mail, you can take it to the post office and collect your Proof of Address card.

Note : I used this as an identification to open an account in State Bank of India.

Excellent post, reviewer. You have posted chennai link. Is this service is available only in Tami nadu then?

Is there any way we can get it done quicker? One month seems to be along time. We are going back to India and need to appky for gas connection. I have not received PAN card yet. If I can get post office work done in a week ,that would be great.

readytoGo, post office in India is a central govt service. It is does not matter it is Tamil nadu and Chandigadh. They are all same.

I think it should be available in other states too. Found few links from Karnataka on searching

It did take 20 days from me to get the Proof of Address card. One of the link states that if the PostMaster knows you then, it can be done quicker.

I did have tough time to get the gas connection. Ration card was mandatory document and I had to wait for 3-4 weeks till I got the ration card.
