Doing the year end taxes estimate now and asset allocation decisions. Cash is now 20% of our assets .. For our age (mid 40s), it seems like a lot but we don't want to invest too much in stock market seeing the dismal returns. What would the investment savvy members do? Buying RE in India using that cash might be one way but we don't have family back home to take care of it. Any suggestions? There are lot of bonds offered these days. IRFC and HUDCO. They might be good investment. www.indianexpress.com/news/Tax-free-bonds-gain-traction--IRFC--Hudco-to-raise-Rs-11K-cr/904112/As for Stock market, it might be a good time to invest. If Nifty touches 5400, we might see a bull market. My portfolio has gone up (or down ) from -23% to -18% in the last 3 days. Planning to increase my allocation in these stocks. 1. Jubilant Foodworks (Dunkin Donuts might be on the way here in India). 2. Tata Coffee (Starbucks is coming to Hindustan before this year end and will be represented through Tata Coffee). Pantaloon Retail, Vishal, Koutons might be other options if FDI in retail is allowed (I am sure they will be allowed after the upcoming elections by this stupid UPA-II government). FDI will be a win-win for everybody apart from middlemen.

^^^^ Thanks a lot. I will see how we can invest in these without incurring PFIC wrath as being a US citizen has disadvantage in investing in Indian market!

Isn't that interesting - after reading that news, I thought that we should invest in Starbucks and you thought of Tata Coffee. Great minds think alike, eh!

Whether it's USA or India. I thought Starbucks was going to do a JV with Tata Coffee, not it is going to be through Tata Global Beverages. The only news I got earlier was that Tata Coffee was going to be associated. Had I heard the news about JV with Tata Global Beverages, I would have got more of that stock. It has shot up by almost 12% in the last 2 days and is on it's way up.

Does anyone put money aside in some state's college savings plan or just manage portfolio on your own, putting money aside in an account for your kid? How are you guys planning that?

I have a question. We used to have an ancestral property in a coastal place which we allowed a NGO to build a community hall and we have papers to prove our donation but the title papers clearly say it's for this and this purpose. In recent years, due to my health , I have not participated in NGO activities. In recent months, we have come to know that it's used for illegal activities. Do we have any rights to evict the owners and give it as a charity to any deserving poor family? Or it's a lost cause?

Although, it would need a few visits to the Governmental offices. India is probably the only place where you need to pay a bribe even to do the right thing.

Thanks. Looks like lengthy court battle and might not be possible for LIA couple. But feel sorry for the misuse of a good intention.
